Book an appointment when your vision starts to bother you in everyday life.
What is a cataract?
The lens behind the pupil is normally clear. With age it becomes cloudy, so light does not reach the retina sharply. A cataract is not dangerous to the eye, but it can make everyday life difficult, e.g. when driving in the dark.
Symptoms
- Blurred vision at all distances
- Glare from the sun, lamps and oncoming cars
- Colours seem duller and more yellowish
- Frequent changes of glasses prescription
Who gets cataract?
Almost everyone develops some degree of cataract with age. Diabetes, smoking, a lot of sunlight and treatment with corticosteroids can speed up its development.
Treatment
The only effective treatment is surgery, in which the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial one. The procedure takes 15–30 minutes under local anaesthesia, and you can go home the same day.
