Benign lumps
A benign lump on the eyelid may be, for example, a cyst, milia (small white beads) or xanthelasma (yellow cholesterol deposits). They are not dangerous, but they can cause irritation, or you may get tired of comments about them.
The operation
- AnaesthesiaNumbing eye drops and a local anaesthetic in the eyelid.
- RemovalThe cyst, milium or xanthelasma is removed. If necessary, the wound is closed with a stitch.
- DressingA soft dressing, which is removed after about an hour.
Aftercare
- The eyelid may be slightly swollen.
- There may be a little bleeding around the eye. It goes away by itself.
- If a stitch has been used, it is removed within 4–7 days.
