What is central serous retinopathy?

Fluid seeps from the choroid beneath the retina in under the macula, lifting the retina like a small blister. This causes a local swelling in the centre of your vision.

Symptoms

  • A blurred or dark spot in the centre of your vision, usually in one eye
  • Straight lines look wavy
  • Things look smaller, and colours seem duller

Risk factors

  • Psychological stress and lack of sleep
  • Corticosteroids in any form: tablets, creams, nasal and asthma sprays, and injections
  • Men aged 30–50

Treatment

In most people the fluid disappears by itself within 2–4 months, and vision returns. If you use corticosteroids, talk to the doctor who prescribed them about whether the treatment can be changed. If the condition persists or comes back, it can be treated with a special laser at a hospital eye department.

It is important to be examined, so other diseases with the same symptoms, e.g. wet AMD, can be ruled out.
