What you can do yourself
- Clean your eyes with lukewarm water and a clean tissue
- Wash your hands often and do not share towels
- Take a break from contact lenses and eye make-up
- For allergy, antihistamine eye drops from the pharmacy can help
For bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotic eye drops can shorten the course.
See a doctor quickly if you have
- Pain in the eye, not just irritation
- Reduced or blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- A red eye and wear contact lenses, as it may be an infection of the cornea
- No improvement after a week
A red, painful eye with reduced vision is rarely ordinary conjunctivitis and should be examined by an eye doctor.
